Privacy policy

DanceCompas (“we”, “us”) helps dancers discover dance events worldwide and plan their dance year. We collect as little personal data as we can, and this page explains what we hold, why, the legal basis, and your rights. The data controller is INVERT LLC (Wyoming, USA). What we collect

• Browsing without an account: nothing personal is stored on our servers, unless you give us your email address for the email list or a reminder, or write to us (both are described below). Your circuits, saved events and filters live only in your browser (see the cookie policy).
• Email list: when you enter your email address in a sign-up box (on an event, city or style page, or the home page), we first send one email asking you to confirm that the address is yours. Nothing else is sent until you confirm, and an address that is not confirmed is deleted after 14 days. Once you confirm, we store the address, when and on which page you confirmed, what you asked for (a city, a dance style, a reminder for one event) and which events we have already sent you, so the same event is not sent twice. You then get at most one email a week, plus the event reminder if you asked for one. If you only ask for a reminder for one event, we keep the address with that event and send that one email. You do not need an account for this. If you have an account, the “send me updates” box in your profile puts the same address on the same list. Every one of these emails has an unsubscribe link, and you can also ask us through the contact form.
• Account & profile: your email and (if you add them) display name, home city, dance styles, level, lead/follow role, bio, socials and profile/gallery photos. You control visibility with the “public profile” setting. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email, name and avatar from Google.
• Community activity: reviews, Going/Interested, follows, practice-partner opt-ins, event submissions and organizer-page edits.
• Schools, instructors & organizers: your page details and, if you claim an existing listing, your claim request, contact email and verification status.
• Messages you send us: when you write through the contact form we store your name, your email address and your message, and a copy is emailed to the people who run DanceCompas so they can answer you. To stop spam we also store a one-way fingerprint of your IP address that changes every day; the address itself is not stored. If you leave an email address or an Instagram name when you submit an event, it is stored with that submission. We use all of this only to answer you, never for marketing.
• Bookings & loyalty: class/event reservations, your DanceCard stamp balance, and (for schools) free-class billing records. Payments are handled by our payment providers; we store a booking record and a payment reference, never full card numbers.
• Usage & technical data: our host processes IP addresses and request logs to serve the site securely. With your consent, we also collect analytics (see cookies). We do not sell your data to anyone.

Why we use it (legal bases under GDPR)

• To provide the service (contract): accounts, profiles, circuits, claims, bookings, loyalty, payments.
• To keep the platform safe (legitimate interest): moderation, abuse and fraud prevention, security logs, basic first-party page-view counts.
• To contact you about your account (contract): claim approvals, booking confirmations. We don't send marketing email without your consent.
• The email list (consent): the weekly email and event reminders go only to addresses that were confirmed from their own inbox, or ticked in a profile. You can withdraw that consent at any time with the unsubscribe link in each email.
• Analytics & affiliate cookies (consent): loaded only if you accept in the cookie banner, and withdrawable any time.

Who processes data for us

We rely on a small set of service providers (“processors”/recipients):

• Vercel: website hosting (request logs, IP addresses).
• Supabase: database, authentication and file storage for accounts, community features and the email list.
• Google: “Sign in with Google” (only if you use it).
• PayPal & Square: payment processing for subscriptions and bookings. They process the payment directly under their own privacy policies; we never see full card numbers.
• Resend: email delivery. Account emails (confirmations, claim codes), the reminders you ask for and the weekly email are all sent through it, so it processes the address each email goes to.
• Google Analytics: usage analytics, only with your consent.
• Travelpayouts: affiliate/partner tracking, only with your consent.

Some embedded content loads from its own servers when a page shows it: Geoapify and OpenStreetMap/CARTO (map tiles), Open-Meteo (weather; it receives only a city's coordinates, never your identity), and Spotify (music players). These providers may see your IP when your browser fetches their content; see the cookie policy.

International transfers

Our providers may process data in the United States and the European Union under standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards.

How long we keep data

Account data is kept while your account exists and deleted when you delete your account. Content you delete (reviews, submissions) is removed from display immediately. Messages from the contact form, and the contact details left with a submission, are kept so we can follow up and are deleted when you ask us to. An address on the email list is kept while you are subscribed. When you unsubscribe we stop sending and keep the address, marked “do not email”, so that nobody can sign it up again without a new confirmation from its inbox; ask us and we delete it completely. Booking and billing records are kept as long as needed for the service and any legal/accounting obligations. Server logs rotate on short cycles set by our host.

Your rights

Wherever you live, and especially under the GDPR/UK GDPR if you're in the EU/EEA/UK, you can ask us to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, or to restrict or object to processing, and to withdraw consent (e.g. for analytics) at any time. Send your request through the contact form at dancecompas.com/contact and we'll respond within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.

Children

DanceCompas is not directed at children. You must be at least 16 to create an account.

Changes

If we change this policy meaningfully, we'll update the date above and, for significant changes affecting account holders, notify you by email or an in-app notice.
